Little Known VA Benefits

(Thanks to Jeff Madsen ’67)

The benefit is a reimbursement of costs that you would incur for long term medical care, provided in your home by a family member/friend or by contract service, or provided in an assisted living facility or provided by a nursing care facility. It is a benefit intended to cover members of the Armed Services who served during a time of war. Once we die, our widows/widowers are also eligible if they require LT Care.

The basic process is that when/if you require long term health care and began to pay for it, you are eligible for reimbursement of your expenses (tax free) up to a max of $24K per year. if you have private LT Care insurance, this can supplement that.

Contact your VA Service Agent to learn about the benefit to be knowledgeable when/if you need LT Care.

The VA is required to provide nursing home care to any veteran who:

  1. needs nursing home care because of a service-connected disability
  2. has a combined disability rating of 70% or more, or
  3. has a disability rating of at least 60% and is:
    1. deemed unemployable, or
    2.  has been rated permanently and totally disabled.

Other veterans in need of nursing care will be provided services if resources are available after the above groups are taken care of.
